Putting the 'green' into The Green Door



Not ones to jump on the bandwagon unless there's good reason, we are wholeheartedly supporting "Veganuary" this year with new vegan-friendly dishes to support our already vegetarian-friendly menus.


Veganuary is more than a hashtag - it's an actual movement designed to get us to try out a vegan lifestyle - it has even got its own website: veganuary.com. Whilst it's not our intention to sway you one way or the other, we are enjoying looking at different ways we can incorporate vegan eating into our corporate lunches - it's all about experimenting and keeping things fresh and interesting.


The Vegan Society statistics show that demand for meat-free food increased by a whopping 987% in 2017 and Google reported that 'vegan' gets four times as many searches than vegetarian or gluten-free!


Plant-based diets are steadily finding favour amongst the British public with many restaurants and caterers reporting a huge increase in the requests for vegan/vegetarian food. Indeed Veganuary.com has a page on its website that lists all the restaurant chains that now include vegan dishes and it makes interesting reading - Zizzi, Pizza Hut, Wagamama, Frankie & Benny's, Bella Italia, Yo Sushi, Pizza Express to name just a few. Although we suspect that many of these include a token nod to vegan dishes (in the same way vegetarian food was presented a few years ago), veganism does look set to change the restaurant landscape.


We are very keen to reflect consumer demand and certainly, since the beginning of this year, we have already been overwhelmed by the requests for salad bowls, vegetarian and vegan options and fruit bowls. Our beetroot and chia seed wrap is already proving popular. We are a nation that likes to think healthy in January as the nation's gym memberships will attest to!


Our produce is all sourced locally too, including our lovely farmer Jim who is just a few miles away, family business - Just Crisps - in Hill Ridware (who we also use for their amazing Rapeseed oil) and the newly opened and very popular Paul Shum Family Butchers in Yoxall, right on the doorstep. More about them in another article - we are very proud of our local suppliers.
